about

Original song--an essay on alienation, displacement and loss. I sang and played guitar/percussion. The song was inspired by a sad Russian girl working on the checkout of my local supermarket (she probably isn't called Martina).

lyrics

HEY MARTINA

hey martina why so sad?
you're the sweetest ptitsa i never had
checkout tsarina baby-blonde
supermarket babylon.
*
hey martina when you sigh
i see lost horizons in your faraway eyes
What keeps you here on a dull nottingham night
dispensing holy water neath flourescent light?
*
hey martina just look at me
i feel like a stranger in my own country
are we kindred spirits me and you?
well here I am standing at the back of the queue!
*
and when thru mucky streets you tread
do you see rolling steppes instead?
and when you curl up all alone
does your spirit long for home?
